Meeting Humu

On our first day in Tamale we set out to find Humu, a woman who has kept in touch with us since we were in Ghana in 2001. Her name is pronounced Oomoo.

Humu has been connected to COLWOD – Collaborating with Women in Distress.  This is the organization our daughter Jennifer worked with.  Many women have found support and received small business loans.

We went to the COLWOD location and looked around at the items for sale, made by the women in their program. This is the place where Jennifer and Humu worked together, back in 2000-2001.

What an array of stuff to see!

Grace is hard at work, sewing the items that are for sale.

Sylvia sews and she is also the PR person.  She called Humu to say we had come.

It was a great reunion with Humu!

She took us to her home and we met her daughter Zynabu who is now 14.  We also greeted her mother next door.  Here we pose in front of Humu's house.

Humu took us to the “container” where she does her batik and tie-dye.

In Ghana huge metal shipping contaners are turned into small shops where people work and sell.

Humu and her daughter fold 6 yards of "calico" to prepare for tie-dye.

Humu has an assortment of "stamps" for the batik.

Humu has found it hard to sell enough cloth in Ghana to be cover her living expenses plus pay tuition fees for Zynabu and medicine for herself.

We spent time placing an order for batik and tie-dye.

We purchase Humu’s cloth and then try to sell it in Canada.  It is very colourful - great for crafting, quilting, table cloths and even clothes.   By selling for Humu we can help her to earn and honourable living.  Let us know if you would like some cloth.
