We managed to get a few hours of sleep as we flew from Winnipeg to Toronto to Paris to Ouagadougou. 38 hours of travel from door to door! Waves of heat engulfed us as we stepped out of the plane and into a large airport shuttle. A porter guided us through customs and all went well. Sharyn Thomson was waiting for us with her characteristic large smile! We piled into her truck and headed for the SIL Centre, with a quick stop to pick up groceries. At the roadside we bought a big watermelon because it's watermelon season. We hit that right!
SIL is the local face of Wycliffe. There is a big centre where Wycliffe workers can stay while they are "in town." Inside the 8 foot walls of the compound there are offices and library and various group facilities, plus small apartments that can be rented by folks like us who have a connection to Wycliffe. We have a a 2 bedroom place that is very comfortable. We have made ourselves right at home. As we look out of our front window, everything is make of the red clay or earth that we walk on! The trees have gigantic leaves. Geckos climb all over - like squirrels do in Winnipeg. It is really a great place to be. Fans and air-conditioning in our bedrooms make the heat manageable!
Ken is the shopper - he loves going to the market for food, or to the Mini Marche (a small corner store with fixed prices - a nice relief for us Westerners! And they even have butter in a fridge!!) He is the first to start preparing a meal - because he is the hungriest! And he does most of the dishes, so we women (Jillian and her Oma) are quite spoiled. But there is always lots to do - as we will be telling you soon, we hope, if our computer cooperates. Prayer request - that the computer will cooperate!! We even hope to send pictures - again depending on making it all work.
Welcome to our Africa blog! We leave on October 23 and return to Winnipeg on November 24. The trip includes 2 weeks in Burkina Faso and 2 weeks in Ghana. This blog tells the story! If you are new to blogs, you should know that the most recent posts are added at the top of the "HOME" tab. You may want to start reading at the bottom to get the sequence. At the very bottom of the page you will see "older posts" which means you can go back even further by clicking on it. Check out our links!

Hi mom and dad and Jillian,
ReplyDeleteGood to hear you are settling in and good to hear about the sights and smells. I was by your house today and Emily enjoyed all her favorite places, books and friends, but I think she found it weird you aren't there. I hope your first Sunday there is good. Love to you three.
